Sex & Nudity

  • Nala makes "bedroom eyes" at Simba, implying she wants to mate with him.
  • Nala and Simba tend to roll and pin each other. As youngsters this is shown in a innocent light, as they get older it gains sexual connotations.

Violence & Gore

  • Scar throws fiery embers at Simba's face.
  • Rafiki fights off the hyenas in the final battle.
  • If this were released today, it'd be PG for action, peril and scary images.
  • Hyenas crawl out from their dark, steaming boneyard to threaten young Simba, Nala, and Zazu. They stick Zazu in a lava pit in an effort to cook him (he rockets off with a smoking trail) and then lunge with snapping jaws at the scurrying cubs. Simba scratches a hyena's face in defense of Nala. Just before disaster strikes, Mufasa charges in and bats the hyenas violently about.
  • Two lions fight.
  • Mufasa and a young Simba struggle to escape from a flood of stampeding antelope. The lions are kicked, stomped and sent careening back and forth by the herd. Mufasa lifts Simba to safety but tumbles backward into the surging mass of animals. Mufasa is later shown lying still, seemingly unscathed; however, it is revealed that he is dead when Simba tries to wake him.

Profanity

  • The word "ass" is alluded to, but not actually spoken, by Timon when he says "Why do I always have to save your... AHHHH!"
  • PG - for sequences of animal violence and some peril
  • None. This is a G-rated picture.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Some scenes with the hyenas may frighten younger viewers, especially those who have fear of hyenas.
  • Even by the MPAA standards in the 90s The Lion King should have definitely been rated PG for: Action Violence, Peril, Scary Images and some Thematic Material
  • Simba is thrown off the edge of a cliff, but grabs onto the edge, and is dangling over a firest fire, but doesn't fall. This part can be intense for some viewers.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • In a scene near the end Shenzi, Banzai, Ed and the rest of the spotted hyenas maul Scar off-screen and kill him by ripping him to shreds. We don't actually see his death, but it is very graphic.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Mufasa's death may be intense for some viewers. It's known as one of the saddest and emotional deaths in the Disney canon. This film is notable for being the first Disney animated film to actually show a dead body onscreen.
