Lionsgate TV Chairman Kevin Beggs on Streamers and TV’s ‘Platinum Era’

  • Variety
Rome – Over the course of two decades in the industry, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs has witnessed the ups and downs of a business that has frequently found itself confronting both dizzying new possibilities as well as existential threats. But these days the veteran exec, who oversees the development of all scripted and non-scripted content for the company, is energized by the prospects for what he calls the “platinum era” of television.

“The new streamers coming into the market are obviously bringing a lot of money and changing the business dynamics, but from a pure selling perspective, and getting new content out…it’s really unbelievably exciting,” said Beggs, speaking Friday at the Mia market in Rome.

Beggs entered the TV biz at a time when four broadcast networks dominated primetime viewing. In the years since the industry has undergone seismic shifts, first with the rise of cable television and

‘WWE 205 Live’ Review (Oct 11th 2019)

  • Nerdly
Welcome to this week’s 205 Live review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this brand is being ignored (even more than usual) to make room for attention to be paid to…I forgot my criticism. The WWE sucks. Oooooh. That felt good. At least John Cena isn’t going to appear on this show. Who wants to see Lio Rush get jobbed out to Triple H? In any case, I haven’t actually told any jokes yet, so that means this review will be good/boring.

Match #1: Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. Drew Gulak & Tony Nese The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

After losing the Nxt Cruiserweight Championship to Lio Rush on WWE Nxt, Drew Gulak looked to rebound by reteaming with his associate Tony Nese to battle Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch in a tag team rematch from last month. Lorcan started the action against his nemesis Gulak,

Mipcom 2019: Streaming Optimism & Rights Flexibility Drive Chatter As Cannes Market Aims to Remain “Centrifugal Force” For Global TV

  • Deadline
Mipcom – the largest international TV market – is changing fast and buyers and sellers are figuring out how to respond to the ever-shifting global landscape.

The corporate consolidation that has been the talk of the Croisette for the last few years has started to have a real-world impact on the distribution business, while the evolution of the streaming services means there are more complex negotiations taking places than ever before. Then there is the changing face of the market itself, which is now a separate market to its April sibling Mip TV.

Comcast’s NBC Universal Global Distribution has finally subsumed Catherine The Great distributor Sky Vision, Disney has brought 20th Century Fox Television Distribution into its beachside tent, while this market is likely to be one of the last where CBS Studios International and Viacom International Media Networks have separate booths and teams.

Endemol Shine International and BBC Studios are back in town,

‘Judy’ Sings at Box Office as ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’ Tops ‘The Farewell’

  • Indiewire
Roadside Attractions’ launch of musical “Judy” gave the weak specialized box office a much-needed boost. The bravura performance by Renée Zellweger along with sustained interest in Hollywood icon Judy Garland propelled the film to a strong initial response at 461 theaters. Other award contenders will have to step up to similar numbers to redeem a problematic year, but this is a promising start of the season. Roadside also notched a box-office milestone as its steady performer “The Peanut Butter Falcon” passed A24’s long-running hit “The Farewell.”

On a smaller scale, Japanese genre film “First Love” (Well Go USA) also started impressively for a subtitled film with $25,000 in two theaters. This bodes well for several highly anticipated foreign-language films ahead.

Several titles of note did not report grosses this week: Netflix opened Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat” starring Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman ahead of its October 18 streaming date. No gross was reported,

Film Review: ‘The Day Shall Come’

Film Review: ‘The Day Shall Come’
“This plays like a penny whistle jammed up an orangutan’s butt.” Lines like that come easy to English writer-director Chris Morris, whose satirical sensibility has made him one of “Veep” creator Armando Iannucci’s inner-circle collaborators and a bit of a controversy magnet in his own right. Remember “Four Lions,” the unapologetically offensive 2010 comedy about an inept British terror cell that opened with the bloopers from an al-Qaida-like video recording and ended with a pair of clumsy mujahedeen killing Osama bin Laden by accident? That was Morris’ idea of a reasonable way to confront the hysteria over jihad: Fight extremism with extreme comedy.

In Morris’ latest powder-keg feature, “The Day Shall Come,” the only thing more outrageous than the jokes are the facts that inspired it. The film ends the way so many American action movies do: with a terrorist attack averted and a couple of special agents shaking

Box Office Preview: ‘Abominable’ Opens Wide as ‘Judy’ Opens Oscar Season

Box Office Preview: ‘Abominable’ Opens Wide as ‘Judy’ Opens Oscar Season
After a week that saw the success of three wide-release openings with “Downton Abbey,” “Ad Astra,” and “Rambo: Last Blood,” we are back to one this week with “Abominable” from DreamWorks Animation. The isolation is the industry’s nod to “Joker,” which opens October 4 and is expected to dominate the month. It’s also a matter of happenstance: Once upon a time, “The Hunt” was expected to open September 27.

A late-September date isn’t unusual for animated features. Sony launched its “Hotel Transylvania” franchise similarly, in anticipation of Halloween. Last year, Warners launched “Smallfoot” to $23 million. And there hasn’t been a major cartoon feature since “The Lion King” more than two months ago.

However, those considerations aren’t the main drivers. This Himalaya-set, Chinese coproduction opening in the Middle Kingdom on a prime period there and the $75 million film is expected to find much of its bounty there.
